A gospel and jazz combo

The Backen Gospel choir, lead by Jenny Lindberg, will receive economical support from the Cultural boost for arranging concerts together with the jazz orchestra VA Big Band in Umeå and surrounding municipalities.

Backen Gospel was started in the year of 2001 and have since then performed together with several other choirs in Umeå and Stockholm. Now they are to co-operate with VA Big Band from Umeå.

– We would like to try new musical forms and want to develop gospel and big band music as a new part of the music scene in Umeå, says Lizzie Ragnarsson, chairwoman of Backen Gospel.

Three concerts will be performed in Umeå, two of them in September 2013 and the third during the capital of culture year. Apart from that, the choir and the band have pencilled in a number of concerts in some of Umeå’s surrounding municipalities. The concerts will also be recorded and published on Backen Gospel’s Website.

– The combination of gospel and big band jazz is quite unusual and we hope we can inspire others within the field of music to similar transboundary collaborations, says Lizze Ragnarsson.

Backen Gospel applied for SEK 7.000 from the Cultural boost and that is the exact amount they’ve been given.
