Umeå2014 hits the road
Umeå2014 has just over five months left until the opening ceremony which is 31 January 2014, but goes on tour in Europe in just a few weeks along with Visit Sweden and a part of the program year. As the first ever European Capital of Culture, Umeå is choosing to head out on tour to draw attention outside their own country.
A tour through several cities is the starting point to give Swedish culture and Umeå2014 a place in Europe. Culinary experiences will be mixed with musical performances, cultural exchanges and film screenings. A transparent building and a Sami tent will be set up at key places and squares, where auroras and Midsummer are displayed side by side with the Sami culture and Swedish flavours. The different sites become the centre of a wide range of cultural events, including live performances by artist Sofia Jannok.
The contrast between summer and winter, the Swedish way of life and the unique, progressive culture in Umeå and northern Sweden will be central elements. Guitars – The Museum, which opens in Umeå next year, is one of the things that will be presented. Designlabland that has contributed to the design and decor is another.
The visitors will also be able take part in seminars, see selected design objects and experience over 100 songs by both famous and unknown artists related to Umeå, recorded with the concept Hammock Sessions. ICEHOTEL is also coming along on the tour and has selected some artists that will sculpt the northern ice. Sameslöjdstiftelsen (the Sami Handicraft Foundation) shows Sami handicrafts and Umeå University will share new research. Måltidsvision (Meal Vision) will provide a food show for invited guests with a taste of the Sami culture in eight seasons.
