Children light up the early winter
Umeå’s children have been invited to the inauguration of Tjakttjadálvvie (early winter), the last of season of Umeå’s European Capital of Culture year. The kids participate by making lanterns that light up on November 21. The thousands of lights will turn an ordinary bleak autumn evening into something magical.
This is the tenth year running when the Preschool and Primary School Development Centre ”Idéan” arrange the powerful manifestation with the children’s lanterns.
Last year there was 4850 candle jars, a record that the organizers wish to beat this year. The goal is set at least 5,500 lanterns. Since Umeå is the European Capital of Culture this year, they also want to challenge and inspire children and educators in other cities to make their own candle jar.
In previous years the lamps have been placed in Vänortsparken, but this year they will light up Rådhusparken next to Väven, Umeå’s new cultural centre which will open on the same day. Those who wish to participate are invited to submit their lanterns to Ideán on November 20, at the Mimer school parking.
