Umeå Joins Royal Visit to France
King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden will pay a state visit to France 2-4 December 2014 at the invitation of French President François Hollande. Umeå2014, the European Capital of Culture, will host a photo exhibition of images from Umeå at the historic railway station Gare de Lyon.
The state visit is intended as an opportunity to further strengthen the close political, financial and cultural ties between Sweden and France. The week has been named La Suède en lumière (Sweden Illuminated) and has been assigned light, an important element in Swedish tradition, as its symbol. The event’s purpose is to arouse curiosity about and interest in Sweden as an innovative and environmentally-conscious country.
Umeå will be represented by Mayor Marie-Louise Rönnmark and City Manager Jonas Jonsson. The king will open the exhibition Ljuset från norr (The Light from the North) at Gare de Lyon station together with Umeå’s City Manager and will participate in the press conference held afterwards for French and Swedish media. The press conference will be held at the historic restaurant Le train bleu, which will serve Swedish and northern Swedish fare during the week.
The programme for the visit also includes attending business and environment seminars as well as a visit to the French parliament’s senate and lunch with the mayor of Paris.
“This unique opportunity in Paris will spotlight Umeå and this past Capital of Culture year,” says Marie-Louise Rönnmark. “The opportunity to highlight Umeå’s and Sweden’s great potential in environmental and business matters alongside the king and queen is something we value highly.”
The Umeå2014 Capital of Culture year has meant a boom for the local tourism industry, including a 60-per-cent increase in the number of foreign visitors to Umeå.
“We can conclude that Umeå has received a boost as an attractive tourist destination through our European marketing campaign and that this means continued development and increased income for the municipality. The opening of our new cultural centre, Väven, and several new hotels gives us reason to feel confident about continued positive development of the tourism sector,” says Jonsson, Umeå’s City Manager.
