Blanche & Marie
Love, passion and the penetrating power of radium are the main ingredients in Blanche & Marie – a newly written opera by Mats Larsson Gothe and Maria Sundqvist. The premiere at NorrlandsOperan is on 10 October 2014.
The opera is based on Per Olov Enquist’s novel The Story of Blanche and Marie and deals with possible and impossible love. Four striking characters form the centrepiece of the opera, which takes place in Paris at the turn of the 20th century. The protagonists are two-time Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie and Blanche Wittman, once the world’s most famous mental patient.
Norrlandsoperan’s version of Blanche & Marie takes place in Paris during the late 1800:s up until 1913. As Marie Curie you will see Norrlandsoperan’s own Susanna Levonen. Blanche Wittman is done by Ingela Bohlin. Director is Elisabet Ljungar.
“Opera is about the relationship between love and death! Radium radiation is a transformative but also a devouring force, very much like human, passionate love. Love and passion in a broad sense – to a friend or to a partner, to a dedicated work, to art – to life”, says Elisabet Ljungar.
The music is composed by Mats Larsson Gothe.
