Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugen Onegin, which is being performed as an opera concertante at NorrlandsOperan in 2014, holds a special position as the most played and loved of Russian operas. The opera is based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin and revolves around Tatjana, the young country girl who falls haplessly in love with the restless heartbreaker Eugen Onegin.
Tchaikovsky painted the story with such sensitivity and palpable empathy that it has a rightful place amongst opera’s masterpieces. Peter Mattei and Maria Fontosh take the title roles.
