Convention with focus on role playing games, dealing with norms and gender equality in gaming.
Gaming as a hobby and culture is a way for many young people to explore society and find their identity. However, sometimes there are issues related to sexism. Role playing games can be a way to create awareness and a better understanding of these questions, as the participants is given the opportunity to explore different moral points of view than their own.
“The role playing hobby in Umeå has a unique opportunity to be a role model for the entire gaming culture, both in Sweden and internationally. We want to show that Northern Sweden has a wide gaming culture that can create added value,” says Jennie Larsson from the Gaia project.
In the Femcon concept, all organisers and game builders must identify themselves as female. However, the convention welcomes both male and female participants. Youth aged 13 to 25 are the main target group, as well as anyone interested in gaming as a hobby or gender equality.
