Japanese film day
Folkets Bio Umeå shows three Japanese films in collaboration with the Japanese Embassy in Stockholm. The films are shown with English subtitles.
15:00 Voices of a Distant Star
16:00 The chef of South Polar
Directed by Shinobu Yaguchi, 2001, 91min, Comedy. The Tadano high school swim team needs a strong shake-up . The new trainer is a young beautiful female teacher, and her idea is that the team must start with synchronized swimming. The problem is that all team members are lousy swimmers – and that it is an all-boys school.
15:00 VOICES OF A DISTANT STAR
Director: Makoto Shinkai , 2002 , 25min.
Anime. Mikako is a high school girl who is sent off on a dangerous mission into space. Her boyfriend Noboru is left on Earth, trying to live a normal life. Can love survive the enormous distances of both space and time? Makoto Shinkai was highly acclaimed for this poetic and beautiful movie which he created almost entirely by himself on a computer at home.
16:00 THE CHEF OF SOUTH POLAR
Director: Shuichi Okita , 2009 , 125min
Drama. Chef Nishimura starts working at the small Polar Dome Fuji station at the South Pole. He will be responsible for cooking for the eight people who work there, everyone of the are very special characters. Preparing food in this environment with scarce raw materials is not easy, but Nishimura is doing everything to make luxurious dishes which helps to keep up the spirits.
The day ends with another Japanese film , at 19:00 Like father, like son – 80kr for this.
