Shahzia Sikander / Parallax
Shahzia Sikander blends the strict discipline of miniature painting from the Indian sub-continent with the Western World’s traditional emphasis on the expressive and personal. In the video installation Parallax, she combines drawing, painting, photography, poetry, music and animation. The work presents an encounter between the abstract and figurative, voices and rhythms. Shahzia Sikander’s work comments on our time’s geopolitical changes, such as the events in the Middle East of recent years. Parallax focuses on the strategically important Strait of Hormuz between Oman, UAE and Iran; its original concept is centred in the tensions engendered by ideas of power and control.
Shahzia Sikander (born 1969) grew up in Lahore, Pakistan though she is now living and working in New York. Her work is represented at MOMA, Whitney Museum and the Guggenheim in New York among others. The presentation at Bildmuseet is her first exhibition in Scandinavia.
