Studio 54 and Other Stories
SUDIO 54 and Other Stories
Hasse Persson was born in 1942 in Borås, and is today one of Sweden’s most respected photographers. He established himself as a press photographer in the United States during the years 1967-1990 with New York as his base. He photographed everything from presidential campaigns to the legendary nightclub Studio 54 in Hell’s Kitchen, New York. It was a legendary nightclub during the disco era of the late 1970s. Hasse Persson had full access to this otherwise closed world and to be able to take pictures in the dark premises with his analogue camera he had to develop a new technique. With the flash, the light from the disco ball and the club lights, he managed to capture the movements on the dance floor. The result is a series in which each image is a short film from a place where reality was fantasy and nothing was impossible.
Hasse Persson has played a significant role in Swedish photography, both as an artist and as a creative director at various arts institutions. He has released five photography books and has received the honorable His Majesty the King Medal for his aesthetic achievements as a photographer.
