The Sami society in the past and present

Swedish Sami Association (SSR) and the Centre for Sami Research (CeSam) – Vaartoe will jointly conduct eight seminars with Sami themes, addressing historical and current Sami themes. The lectures will be planned with Såhkie – Umeå Sami Association.

The organizers want to raise awareness of current Sami issues, and about how the Swedish Sami policy has affected the Sami history. Some examples of topics for the seminars are; ethics in indigenous research, land exploitation, schools for Sami children and online expressions of hate against the Sami.

Each seminar will be a meeting between theory and practice. Sami actors, such as Sami Parliament members and reindeer herders, and scientists add insight to the issues discussed. A seminar in Brussels is also being planned, as Arctic issues are very interesting from a European perspective.

The long term goal is to establish a forum where SSR and Cesam in partnership can offer recurrent public lectures after the Capital of Culture year has ended.
