Saint Cuthbert’s Relationship with the Animals: A New Adam?

Dolly Jørgensen, forskare vid Ekologi, miljö och geovetenskap vid Umeå universitet

Nature plays a significant role in the relationship between St. Cuthbert (c.634–687) and God. In his hagiographical tradition from England, the animal actors are widespread, including his horse who exposed hidden food, the otters who tended to him, and the birds whom he drove out after their nest building activities were deemed harmful. Although many people have thought of St. Francis as the first saint in touch with nature, this talks puts St. Cuthbert’s earlier relationship with nature into a biblical context as well as the physical context of the British Isles.
