Virgin Mary Musealised
Virgin Mary Musealised: How did divine motherhood and saintliness end up in a museum?
Helena Wangefelt Ström, doktorand i Kultur- och medievetenskaper vid Umeå universitet, föreläser på engelska.
Virgin Mary played a vital role in the life of the Church, as well as for common people, as a motherly role model, a mediatrix, and an intercessor before the Reformation. Some centuries later, in early 20th century, we find her being part of the Swedish folklore and local images of her are taken to central museums in order to be preserved and studied, but not venerated. How did this happen? Was the musealisation of Mary serving as a taming of a threatening past – or, was she in fact ever fully locked up in the museum cage?
